Brotato: Primal Dread is paid DLC that drops the potato into a prehistoric Jungle map with 20 waves, a new Evolution stat with two paths, and mutated and cyber-enhanced enemies. You need the Brotato base game to play it.
What the DLC adds
The official launch announcement and Steam store page list:
- A new Jungle map with 20 waves of new enemies, elites, and bosses
- 10 new characters
- 17 new weapons
- 40 new items
- The Evolution stat and its two paths
- New music and achievements
These are DLC additions, not base-game totals. The same launch also shipped free base-game changes, including an Item Set menu for toggling expansion content and balancing for Nightmare and older characters. Those free changes are separate from the paid DLC.
How a Jungle run plays
The core loop is unchanged from base Brotato: survive waves, collect green materials from kills and crates, then spend them in the shop between waves. The Jungle layers in dinosaur-style enemies and new hazards.
The launch post warns that packs of dinosaurs can charge through the undergrowth in hordes, and that the map adds holes as an environmental hazard — flying dinosaurs were introduced partly because of them. Community footage shows enemies that dash and fire projectiles, so treat the first few waves as a scouting run rather than a damage check.
That player run also shows trees being destroyed for crate chances. It is one player's experience, not an official rule, so don't treat it as a guaranteed drop rate.
Mecha vs. Mutation
Evolution is the headline mechanic. You push it in one of two directions by picking up item drops on the map, and each direction changes both your bonuses and the enemies you face. The official launch post presents them as different trades rather than a ranking.
| Path | What you gain | What you face |
|---|---|---|
| Mecha | Reinforce weapons with mecha parts for extra stats; dismantle mecha weapons in the shop for more parts | Mecha dinosaurs that fire lasers and leave oil puddles that slow you |
| Mutation | A chance to randomly copy your item effects, multiplying them | Mutant dinosaurs that spread acid |
In the Variant gameplay video, the creator notes that mutations can also upgrade existing items and that the path leans on randomness. Treat any specific stacking or merging behavior as something to confirm in your own run rather than a settled rule.
For more detail, see the Evolution overview, the Mecha path, and the Mutation path.
Characters worth knowing first
The DLC ships 10 characters. The launch post teases three by name:
- Time Shifter — take a hit and slow everything around you except yourself.
- Veteran — a one-potato army built for swarms, with no time to heal.
- Archeologist — dig up crates from dig sites and get stronger with each crate.
Community footage also covers the Variant, which can only evolve on the Mutant side, automatically mutates at the end of each wave, and has a 50% chance for a mutating item to be replaced by a better-tier mutated item. A separate Droid gameplay video shows a character whose damage taken removes materials instead of health — a run where spending down to zero before a wave is genuinely risky.

Items, weapons, and pets
The launch post calls out Fossils: each Fossil is unique, and its effect gets stronger for every other Fossil in your inventory. It also confirms 3 new pets.
The pets page and fossils page cover what's documented so far, with broader coverage under weapons and items.
Patch notes that affect early runs
The newest official patch in this material is v1.2.0.1, published November 3, 2026. Relevant changes for new players:
- Mutagens (the green flasks dropped by mutant enemies) drop more often: base chance 2% → 3%.
- Mutations can no longer copy the Survivor's "no weapon in the shop" effect.
- Baby Trex speed is capped at 95% of the target player's max speed.
The developers said they were focusing on bug fixes first and would address balancing after reading feedback, so expect further changes.
