Brotato: Primal Dread Mecha vs Mutation Guide

Reviewed: · Primal Dread Wiki editors

How Primal Dread's Evolution stat splits into Mecha and Mutation, what each path pays out, and how to choose based on your build.

In Brotato: Primal Dread, Evolution is a stat you push in one of two directions: Mecha or Mutation. You pick a direction by grabbing the matching drops on the map. Mecha reinforces your weapons and adds stats; Mutation randomly copies your items. Each path also changes the dinosaurs you fight. The developer presents both as trade-offs, not as tiers, so there is no official "best" pick.

These rows come from the official launch announcement, which describes Evolution as making your foes stronger while giving you extra power in return.

Mecha: weapons first

Mecha is the weapon-side path. Parts are the currency, and the announcement names two sources: picking them up, and dismantling mecha weapons in the shop. Each push gives you additional stats on top of reinforcing your weapons. The trade-off is the laser-and-oil dinosaur variant, and oil puddles slow you down.

A community playthrough shows the mechanic in action: mechanizing a weapon lets you choose an extra stat such as ranged damage, attack speed, crit chance, or move speed, and one weapon can be mechanized more than once at a rising cost (player video). That same creator could not confirm whether merging two mechanized weapons keeps both sets of mods, so treat mod-merging behavior as unconfirmed.

See the Mecha path page for a fuller breakdown.

Mutation: items first

Mutation is the item-side path. Its payoff is randomly copying your items, so it rewards a build that already has strong item effects worth duplicating. The cost is acid-spreading mutant dinosaurs. Because the copy is random, the announcement calls this "the path of chaos and power getting out of control."

One patch note matters if you run Survivor: mutations can no longer copy the Survivor's "no weapon in the shop" effect (patch v1.2.0.1 notes). The same patch raised the base mutagen drop chance from 2% to 3%, so mutagens turn up a little more often than at launch. That is a frequency change only; the notes do not say either path is now stronger.

See the Mutation path page for details.

How to choose

  • Weapon-focused build with room to upgrade? Mecha reinforces what you already carry and adds stats on top.
  • Item-heavy build with effects worth duplicating? Mutation's random copying has more to multiply.
  • Worried about hazards? Oil puddles slow you; acid spreads across the arena. They punish different mistakes, and the sources do not rank one as safer.
  • Undecided? Pick based on whether your power sits in weapons or items.
