Brotato: Primal Dread Mutation Guide

How the Mutation path works in Brotato: Primal Dread: mutagens, random item copying, mutant acid, and the v1.2.0.1 drop-rate change.

Mutation is one of the two directions of the Evolution stat added in Brotato: Primal Dread. Committing to it gives you the chance to randomly copy your items' effects, but mutant dinosaurs start spreading acid across the map. The v1.2.0.1 patch raised the base drop chance for the green mutagen flasks that feed this path from 2% to 3%.

How the Mutation path works

Evolution is pushed in two directions, Mecha or Mutant, by picking up the matching item drops on the map. The official launch announcement describes Mutation as "the path of chaos and power getting out of control": you get the chance to multiply the effects of your items by randomly copying them. In exchange, mutant dinosaurs spread acid "everywhere they can. Mostly in your face."

The same post treats the two paths as a real choice, not a ladder. Mecha reinforces weapons with parts and adds stats but brings laser-firing mecha dinosaurs and oil puddles that slow you. Mutation brings copying and acid. Neither is described as universally better, so pick based on which hazard and bonus you can handle.

Mutagens: the green flasks

Patch v1.2.0.1, published November 3, 2026, raised the base drop chance for mutagens — the "green little flask dropped by mutant enemies" — from 2% to 3%. The notes list this under balance, not fixes, so expect further tuning.

What mutation can and cannot copy

The same patch made one specific change: mutations can no longer copy the Survivor's "No weapon in the shop" effect. That is the only copying restriction the official notes name. No source lists every effect that can or cannot be duplicated, so treat any claimed full list as unverified.

Community observations

In a launch-period gameplay video, the creator plays the Variant character, which can only evolve on the mutant side, to show the path in action. The creator reports that mutation consumables appear on the map, that tumors and copied effects are described as weaker at low evolution and stronger at high evolution, and that mutant items start appearing in shops as the path progresses. The same video shows mutated enemies (visibly different, often greenish) behaving more aggressively. These are one player's observations on a lower difficulty, not developer documentation.

Practical takeaways

  • Commit to one direction. Evolution moves toward Mecha or Mutant based on which drops you pick up, and each path carries its own bonus and its own enemy hazard.
  • Grab mutagens when they appear. At a 3% base drop chance they stay uncommon, so skipping them slows the path.
  • Expect acid. Mutant dinosaurs spread it, so keep room to move instead of parking in one spot.
  • Don't assume a fixed copy list. Only the Survivor shop effect is officially confirmed as excluded from copying.
