Brotato: Primal Dread Items Guide — Fossils and Evolution

Reviewed: · Primal Dread Wiki editors

How Primal Dread items work: the official count, Fossil stacking, and how Mecha and Mutation interact with items.

Brotato: Primal Dread adds 40 new items, per the official Steam store listing. Two item themes are documented well enough to plan around: Fossils, which reward stacking, and the Evolution stat, where the Mutation path can copy your item effects.

Fossils: treat them as a set

Fossils are the item family the developers highlighted in the launch announcement. Each Fossil is unique, but its effects get stronger for each other Fossil in your inventory, and wearing them all gives a distinct look. The post does not list individual Fossil stats or say whether they occupy a limited number of slots.

A community DLC breakdown notes that a dinosaur body-part Fossil grants increased range for other Fossil items. That is one creator's reading of trailer footage, not a developer stat sheet, so check the exact numbers in your own run. The planning takeaway is that Fossils are a package deal — judge them as a group rather than one piece at a time.

Mecha reinforces weapons, not items

The Evolution stat has two directions, described in the launch announcement:

  • Mecha upgrades your weapons. You pick up mecha parts, and dismantling mecha weapons in the shop yields more parts. In exchange, mecha dinosaurs fire lasers and leave oil puddles that slow you.
  • Mutation is the item path: it gives a chance to randomly copy your item effects. The cost is mutant dinosaurs that spread acid.

Because Mutation copying is random, it is a reasoning-based fit for builds where most items are useful in multiples — but the sources do not state how often copying triggers or whether it can repeat. See the Evolution overview for the stat itself and the Mecha page for the weapon side.

What the gameplay footage shows

A Portuguese-language gameplay video shows items being picked up on the jungle map while the player reasons aloud about which ones suit the character. It is live commentary that sometimes corrects itself mid-sentence and does not present a verified item list, so use it to get a feel for how items play rather than as a stat reference. Practical item priorities

  • Choose Mecha or Mutation early, since each adds hazards you will need to survive.
  • On a Mutation run, favor items you would be happy to own twice.
  • Collect Fossils as a group instead of judging one piece in isolation.
  • Read exact item text in the in-game Codex, since these sources give counts and themes rather than a full database.
