Brotato: Primal Dread Jousting Lance Build Notes

Reviewed: · Primal Dread Wiki editors

What a Time Shifter Jousting Lance run showed about speed scaling, cleave, and late-run damage in Primal Dread.

The Jousting Lance is a Primal Dread melee weapon that, according to one creator's Danger 5 run, scales with movement speed. That makes it a natural pairing with the Time Shifter, whose kit slows everything except you when you take a hit. The run cleared the wave, but the creator stressed that the lances are early-game powerhouses that need extra damage sources later. The sources here do not publish the weapon's exact stats or its speed-to-damage conversion.

Why the Lance suits the Time Shifter

The official launch post describes the Time Shifter as taking a hit to slow everything around you except yourself. That gives a melee build room to close distance and swing while enemies move slowly. In the video, the creator stacked speed and used the lances' cleave to cut down groups, treating Dodge as a dead stat because the character's kit leans away from it.

The creator read the weapon as scaling damage from speed and also mentioned a 50% melee-damage scaling on the tooltip. That second figure is their in-game read, not something an official source confirms.

What the run showed

  • Strong opening. With several lances and cleave, the creator described one-shotting most regular enemies through the early waves.
  • Speed drives damage. Repeated speed pickups were taken specifically because they feed the lance's damage, and the creator said the character was fast enough to walk between slowed enemies.
  • Cleave handles crowds. Wide swings let the build push through some elite and boss patterns that punish single-target weapons.
  • It needs late damage. The creator called the lances "really strong early game weapons" and warned the build weakens without bigger damage payoffs later.

Items the creator looked for

These are community observations from the run, not official recommendations:

  • Power Generator was the main target, described as adding damage based on raw speed. The creator called it a big pickup for this build.
  • Attack speed was flagged as a need because the lances have downtime between swings.
  • Crit chance was favored over flat melee damage in the shop, based on the creator's judgment.
  • Bloody Hand came up as a possible permanent-slow synergy. The creator passed on it early and later questioned that call, though the timing in the transcript is ambiguous.

Where the build strains

  • Dodge adds little. The character's kit pushes you away from Dodge, so Dodge-only upgrades were treated as low value.
  • Slowing can fight melee. Because you want enemies to come to you, the slowdown sometimes works against a melee plan; the creator said it "might be more beneficial" for ranged builds.
  • Late damage needs support. By the later waves the creator called their damage "mediocre" and leaned on a burning item to finish the boss, describing it as "a bit of a cheese."

Evolution path

The run used the Mutation side of the Evolution system. Per the official launch post, Mutation randomly copies item effects and brings acid-spreading mutant dinosaurs, while Mecha reinforces weapons and adds laser-firing mecha dinosaurs plus oil puddles. The sources do not rank the two paths; the creator simply chose Mutation as more fun for this character.

Patch context

The first post-launch patch, Patch v1.2.0.1, published November 3, 2026, raised the base mutagen drop chance from 2% to 3% and capped Baby Trex speed at 95% of the target player's max speed. It did not list changes to the Jousting Lance. The DLC launched November 2, 2026 per the official launch announcement.
