Brotato: Primal Dread Time Shifter Speed Build

Reviewed: · Primal Dread Wiki editors

A community-run Time Shifter and Jousting Lance speed build for Brotato: Primal Dread, with caveats on shop luck and Evolution.

This is one creator's Time Shifter run with Jousting Lance weapons, built around stacking Speed so the Lance's Speed scaling carries damage. The creator cleared Danger 5 with it, but the run depended heavily on shop luck and ended with a late burning pickup. Treat it as a template to adapt, not a guaranteed list.

Why the pieces fit

The pitch in the video is a time traveler wielding a medieval weapon: Jousting Lance gains damage from Speed, and the Time Shifter is a fast character. When the Time Shifter takes damage, everything around it slows while the player keeps moving, which the creator used to walk between enemies and projectiles. The official Primal Dread launch post describes the character the same way: take a hit and slow everything except yourself.

The creator also noted the character cannot take Dodge, so survivability came from movement, Armor, max HP and healing instead. With several Lances held, the creator reported the weapon set granted armor and dodge — the dodge portion being wasted on this character.

Stat priorities from the run

  • Speed first. It feeds Lance damage and kiting. The creator later warned that too much Speed can feel disorienting, so stop adding it once movement gets hard to read.
  • Crit chance and melee damage. The creator leaned toward crit early, noting the Lance also has melee scaling.
  • Attack speed. Needed to cut downtime between swings once damage was online.
  • Armor, max HP and life steal. The main defensive package given no Dodge. Cleave hits with life steal did most of the healing.
  • Luck (optional). The creator considered it for finding epic items, but ranked it below damage.

Evolution: what the creator did

The creator said they preferred the evolution side of the mechanic, calling it more random and more fun than the mechanized path. The official launch post lays out both directions: Mecha reinforces weapons with parts and dismantling, while Mutation randomly copies item effects. The creator's own description of which path they took was loose, so do not read this run as a clean endorsement of either one.

In the run, each Evolution point added more evolutions and empowered more enemies (the green glowing ones). The creator judged the payoff worth the stronger enemies. One item they valued was the Virus, which charms enemies below a health threshold — useful when extra evolved enemies are on screen.

Items the creator chased

  • Power Generator. The headline pickup, converting raw Speed into damage. The creator hunted it and bought it late. The effect comes from the video; the Steam store page lists 40 new items but does not detail this one.
  • More Jousting Lances. The creator took Lances whenever offered and was surprised how few appeared.
  • A burning source late. The creator added burning near the end specifically to help finish the boss, while noting it was a bit of a cheese.

What the run looked like

Early waves were easy: Speed plus Lance cleave one-shot most enemies. The creator warned that Lances are strong early weapons that fall off without a large payoff, and that tanky, fast enemy types became annoying when they survived long enough to close in. The time-slow passive was described as very strong.

The final fight was tense. The creator took a near-one-shot hit, healed back through life steal, and survived to the end rather than killing the boss outright, crediting the late burning pickup for the finish.

Caveats

This is a single creator run on one map, and shop rolls drove much of it. The creator was still learning the new map and characters during the recording. For background on the character, see the Time Shifter page; for the weapon, the Jousting Lance page; and for the mechanic, the Evolution overview.
