Brotato: Primal Dread Time Shifter Guide

Reviewed: · Primal Dread Wiki editors

How the Time Shifter's hit-triggered slowdown works in Brotato: Primal Dread, plus what the sources do and don't confirm.

The Time Shifter is one of the 10 new characters in Brotato: Primal Dread, and its signature mechanic is reactive: take a hit and everything around you slows down except yourself. It is not a button you press or a resource you spend. The slowdown is the character's answer to being hit, so the useful way to think about it is "what do I do with the window I get," not "how do I farm hits."

What the official description establishes

The official Primal Dread launch announcement introduces the Time Shifter as the character for players who felt Brotato was too fast: with it, "take a hit and slow down everything around you, except yourself."

That is the whole developer description. It does not state exact slowdown percentages, how long the effect lasts, whether it has a cooldown, or what other passive stat changes the character has. Treat any precise numbers you encounter elsewhere as community observation, not developer data.

What it means in practice

  • The slowdown is defensive by default. You get it when something lands on you. That window is the moment to reposition, heal back, or clear the enemies that were closing in.
  • It rewards movement over evasion stats. Because the slow applies to your surroundings rather than to you, you get the most out of it by walking through gaps and repositioning while things are slowed.
  • Hit severity is not documented. The official text does not say how much damage a triggering hit deals or whether some hits are safer to take than others, so there is no supported basis for planning to eat hits on purpose. Treat the effect as a reaction to damage you couldn't avoid.

A community example: speed plus a speed-scaling weapon

One creator's Danger 5 run paired the Time Shifter with the Jousting Lance, a melee weapon that scales with speed, and reported the character felt strong and the slowdown "pretty significant," with bullets slowed as well. The same creator said the slow can feel odd on a fast melee build because melee often wants enemies to come to you, and reported that the character cannot take dodge, so avoiding hits came down to movement. That run also leaned on the Evolution system for its power curve. These are one player's observations, not developer-confirmed values.

If that pairing interests you, see the Jousting Lance page and the speed build overview. This guide does not repeat that run's shop-by-shop plan.

Evolution and the Time Shifter

The DLC's new Evolution stat pushes in two directions, Mecha and Mutation, and the official launch post describes them as different bonus structures with different enemy changes rather than ranking one above the other. The sources provided here do not specify a forced Evolution path for the Time Shifter, and they do not describe its full range of options either way. For the mechanics of each path, see Evolution, Mecha, and Mutation.

Things the sources do not establish

The newest official patch note in the supplied material is Patch v1.2.0.1 (published November 3, 2026). It raises the mutagen base drop chance from 2% to 3%, stops Mutation from copying the Survivor's "No weapon in the shop" effect, and caps Baby Trex speed at 95% of the target player's max speed. It does not mention the Time Shifter.
