How the Archeologist works in Brotato: Primal Dread: dig up crates from dig sites and get stronger with every crate you collect.
The Archeologist (sometimes searched as "Archaeologist") is one of the 10 new characters in the Brotato: Primal Dread DLC. The official launch post describes the character's core loop simply: you "dig up crates from dig sites and get stronger with every crate." That is the whole confirmed identity of the character — a crate-driven scaling potato.
How the Archeologist plays
The Archeologist is built around finding and opening crates. According to the official Primal Dread launch announcement, dig sites are part of the new Jungle map, and each crate you dig up makes the character stronger. The post frames the character as a nod to the classic dinosaur-movie archaeologist, which fits the Jungle setting.
Practically, that means your run should revolve around two things:
- Reaching crates. Crates come from dig sites, so movement and map awareness matter. If you cannot get to a dig site, you cannot scale.
- Surviving while you dig. The Jungle adds charging dinosaur hordes and flying enemies that ignore holes in the ground, so you need enough defense and damage to stay alive while you work the map. See the Jungle guide for the hazards the developers described.
Spelling: Archeologist vs. Archaeologist
The in-game and official spelling is Archeologist. The longer "Archaeologist" is the common alternate spelling players search for, and it refers to the same character. If you are looking up builds or discussion, try both spellings.
Build direction (principles, not a fixed build)
Because the official sources confirm only that crates make the Archeologist stronger, the safe approach is to build around consistency rather than a specific item list:
- Prioritize survivability early. You need to survive long enough to collect crates, so don't neglect defensive stats while you scale.
- Lean into the crate payoff. Whatever the crates grant, the character is designed to reward collecting them, so avoid strategies that keep you pinned in one spot.
- Decide on your Evolution path. The DLC's Evolution stat splits into Mecha and Mutation. Mecha reinforces weapons and adds stats but brings laser-firing mecha dinosaurs and oil puddles; Mutation randomly copies item effects but brings acid-spreading mutants. Read the Evolution overview, Mecha, and Mutation pages before committing.
For general build thinking that applies across characters, see the build principles page.
Where the Archeologist sits in the roster
The Archeologist is one of the 10 new characters in Primal Dread, alongside the Time Shifter, Veteran, and others. The characters hub lists what is documented so far. Note that the DLC requires the base Brotato game, so you must own it before the Archeologist is available.
