Brotato: Primal Dread on Steam — Ownership, Price, Setup

Reviewed: · Primal Dread Wiki editors

Primal Dread is $3.99 Brotato DLC requiring the base game. What's paid DLC, what's the free 1.2 update, and how to avoid mod conflicts.

Brotato: Primal Dread is paid DLC for Brotato, sold on Steam as app 4498220. It requires the Brotato base game (app 1942280), costs $3.99, and Steam lists its release date as November 2, 2026. The same update cycle also shipped free base-game changes, and keeping the paid and free parts separate is the main thing to sort out before you buy.

What you need to own

The Steam store page states that the content requires the base game on Steam to play. Buying Primal Dread by itself will not give you a playable game.

The store page lists three bundles that include it: Brotato plus Abyssal Terrors plus Primal Dread at 10% off the three items, a four-item bundle that adds the soundtrack at 15% off, and the Blobfish Games Collection at 20% off. Bundle discounts are promotional and change, so confirm the live price before buying.

The October 8 announcement gives the standalone price as $3.99 / €3.99 / £3.39 / CN¥18.00. See the price page for more detail.

The launch announcement splits its contents into two lists, and buyers often mix them up.

Primal Dread DLC (paid):

  • A new Jungle map with 20 waves of new enemies, elites and bosses
  • 10 new characters
  • 17 new weapons
  • 40 new items
  • The new Evolution stat
  • New music tracks and new achievements

Free base-game update 1.2 (no DLC purchase needed):

  • The Item Set feature
  • Nightmare difficulty enemy balancing
  • Buffs to older characters from the base game and Abyssal Terrors

The 1.2 update post describes Item Set as a menu where you switch entire content groups on or off, including content from expansions and free updates. The developer gives turning everything off for a vanilla feel, or removing Paws & Claws while keeping the rest, as examples. It can be opened from the Character Selection screen.

How Evolution changes a run

Evolution is the DLC's headline mechanic. You push it toward one of two directions by picking up item drops on the Jungle map, and each direction changes both your bonuses and your enemies. The launch announcement describes both:

PathWhat you gainWhat you face
MechaWeapon reinforcement and extra stats; mecha parts evolve weapons, and dismantling mecha weapons in the shop yields more partsMecha dinosaurs that fire lasers and leave oil puddles that slow you
MutationA chance to randomly copy your items, multiplying their effectsMutant dinosaurs that spread acid

The developer presents neither path as the better one. Mecha is the weapon-focused route; Mutation is described as "the path of chaos and power getting out of control." Start with the Evolution overview, or go deeper on Mecha and Mutation.

Jungle hazards and content notes

The Jungle adds holes as an environmental hazard, which the announcement says is why the map includes flying enemies. It also describes packs of dinosaurs charging out of the undergrowth in hordes.

Among the new items, the Fossil set works as a group: each Fossil is unique, and its effect gets stronger for every other Fossil in your inventory. The launch announcement also mentions 3 new pets. Its body text calls the item count "more than 30," while the store page and the same post's feature list say 40; use 40 as the official count.

Patch v1.2.0.1 and mods

The most recent official patch note in the feed as of this writing is v1.2.0.1, published November 3, 2026. It combines balance adjustments with bug fixes, and the developer says further balancing is planned after reading feedback. The listed balance changes:

  • Mutagens (green flasks dropped by mutant enemies) drop more often: base chance raised from 2% to 3%.
  • Mutations can no longer copy the Survivor's "No weapon in the shop" effect.
  • Baby Trex speed is capped at 95% of the target player's maximum speed.

The fixes include a co-op crash when several Survivor players take a crate reward at once, Hourglass shop display errors, wave 19 shop button clipping, co-op mecha-part counter and stat-choice layout problems, a Codex entry for the Brachiosaurus, and several translation fixes.

Both the launch post and the 1.2 update post warn that the game update can conflict with outdated mods and ask players to deactivate all mods before playing. That is the developer's stated request; it is not a guarantee that every mod-related crash is fixed.

Platforms and co-op

The Steam listing has system requirement tabs for Windows, macOS and Linux. The Windows minimum lists a 2 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, 128 MB graphics with OpenGL 3+, and 200 MB storage; the macOS and Linux tabs list the same processor, memory, graphics and storage figures. Store features include shared/split-screen co-op, Remote Play Together, Steam Achievements, Trading Cards, Workshop, Cloud and Family Sharing.

These sources do not establish Primal Dread release dates for Switch, Xbox or PlayStation. Don't assume the Steam date applies elsewhere.

Release timing

Steam lists November 2, 2026. An October 30 advance notice said the DLC would arrive between November 2 and 3 depending on time zone, which explains a different date showing in some regions. For the full timeline, see the release date page.

Reviews at launch

Steam shows "Mixed" aggregate reviews on the store page at the time of this writing: 55% of 640 all-time reviews positive, and 52% of 608 recent reviews positive. These are launch-window numbers and will move.
